When it comes to doctrinal contentions, the Bible provides some pretty solid advice on how to approach them—after all, who better to guide us than the Good Book itself?
Take a look at the Book of Acts, where we find some well-meaning brethren teaching that one must be circumcised according to the Law of Moses to be saved. Yikes! Can you imagine the debate? So, what did the church in Antioch do? They decided to send messengers to the church council in Jerusalem for some heavenly guidance. Acts 15:1-2[1]BUT SOME men came down from Judea and were instructing the brethren, Unless you are circumcised in accordance with the Mosaic custom, you cannot be saved. [Gen. 17:9-14.]2]And when Paul and Barnabas had no small disagreement and discussion with them, it was decided that Paul and Barnabas and some of the others of their number should go up to Jerusalem [and confer] with the apostles (special messengers) and the elders about this matter.
Now, picture this: the church council, including none other than Apostle Peter, gathered to discuss this hot topic. Spoiler alert: they didn’t agree with the teaching! And just like that, a doctrinal dilemma was resolved without turning into a holy wrestling match.
So, the next time you find yourself in a doctrinal showdown, remember the wisdom of the early church: seek out guidance, engage in open dialogue, and keep the humor alive! After all, we’re all in this together, trying to make sense of the divine.
