Life is all about surrounding yourself with people who offer solid advice when you need it, not those who share questionable insights based on their own limited knowledge. Take, for example, the biblical figure Ahithophel. He was a trusted advisor to King David, offering sound counsel. However, things took a turn when he advised David’s son, Absalom. Instead of wise guidance, Ahithophel suggested Absalom sleep with his father’s concubines. 2 Samuel 16:20-2220]Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, Give your counsel. What shall we do?21]And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to your father’s concubines whom he has left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be made strong.
[22]So they spread for Absalom a tent on the top of the [king’s] house, and Absalom went in to his father’s harem in the sight of all Israel.
Now, while Absalom did follow that advice, it’s safe to say it wasn’t exactly the kind of guidance he should have been seeking!
Reflective questions about this teaching :
a) Based on our discussion, what advice did Ahithophel give to Absalom? Would you consider it the right advice for him at that moment?
b) Let’s ponder the purpose of this lesson, ensuring we learn the importance of choosing good advisors over bad ones!
