There’s a saying that goes, “A hand that gives receives,” and it seems we should embrace this wisdom by generously supporting the work of the LORD. But it’s not just about the church; it’s also about contributing to all those God has placed in our care.
Running God’s work requires funding for strategic efforts, operations, and ongoing support. Take, for example, the rebuilding of the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the king of Babylon. King Darius proposed that the people contribute voluntary offerings for this noble cause. In the same spirit, we too should be ready to support the work of the LORD. Just like they did back then, people stepped up and gave generously. In Ezra 2:68-69, it’s recorded that some family heads made freewill offerings to rebuild God’s house. They contributed as they were able, giving a whopping 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and even 100 priests’ garments!
Reflective questions about the teaching :
a) What did people give towards the rebuilding of God’s temple, which had previously been destroyed by the king of Babylon?
b) What significance does this lesson hold for your everyday life?
Confession prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, I pray that I may give willingly whatever is necessary for your work, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
